Who:

The BC-based, family-owned Armstrong Group (AG), is the owner and operator of the world-acclaimed Rocky Mountaineer train, Whistler Mountaineer train, Gray Line West and other associated tourism and hospitality businesses. Since its inception in 1990 (as the Great Canadian Railtour Company), AG has become the largest privately owned passenger rail service in North America.

Founder, Executive Chairman & CEO Peter Armstrong has more than 30 years of experience in the travel and tourism industry. Under his leadership, the company has evolved from a small entrepreneurial dream to become one of Canada’s leading tourism providers. In 2007, Armstrong appointed a new company President, Randy Powell to lead the business and work closely with the management team to develop a strategic vision as the company strives to become the premier provider of exceptional travel experiences in North America.

What:

AG is best known for operating Western Canadian tourist trains, specifically, the acclaimed Rocky Mountaineer, which travels on three routes between Canada’s West and the Canadian Rockies. In 2008, the company will have hosted one million guests from around the world and is the premier provider of Canadian travel experiences, offering an array of unique vacation packages. AG is driven by a commitment to offering an outstanding travel experience, which is evident in the high level of guest satisfaction.

In 2005, AG acquired Gray Line West motorcoach operations based in Banff, AB and Victoria, BC, increasing the number of employees to over 1500 and enabling the company to offer a seamless guest travel experience throughout Western Canada. In 2006, AG launched two new tourist train routes in BC and Alberta: the Whistler Mountaineer, offering a daily service between North Vancouver and Whistler, BC; and the Rocky Mountaineer Fraser Discovery Route, a breathtaking trip between Whistler, BC and Jasper, AB in the Canadian Rockies.

The company also operates the following:

  • 86 pieces of rolling stock for use on all routes;
  • 16 custom-built GoldLeaf Service glass dome coaches;
  • Two River Junction Musical Revue and The Great Canadian Lumberjack Show;
  • A 22-acre maintenance yard located in Kamloops, BC;
  • The Thompson Hotel in Kamloops, BC;
  • A 20,000 square foot Rocky Mountaineer Station located on an eight-acre site in Vancouver (remodelled at a cost of $4 million CDN);
  • Gray Line West, sightseeing and charter motorcoach services in Banff, AB as well as Victoria, BC;
  • Royal Blue Line Motor Tours based in Victoria, BC

How:

AG is supported by company President Randy Powell, Glenn Munro C.A., Executive VP, Corporate Development, Robert Nice, C.A. Executive VP and CFO, Graham Gilley, Senior VP of Marketing and Sales, Peter Casement, VP of Operations and Mark Southern, VP of Guest Services. James E. Terry has been the Chief Operating Officer since 1999 and along with his six-person Management Team, carries responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the AG entities.
